Breast Reduction
-
“Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure where we reduce the size of breasts in order to improve their appearance, and in quite a lot of cases, to alleviate some of the functional discomfort that comes with having large breasts. At the same time, we not only reduce the size, we also improve the shape of the breasts. We also reposition the nipple so that it is sat at an appropriate height. During the operation, we make some incisions during which we remove the excess skin and excess tissue in order to achieve the desired size and the shape of the breast. At the same time, we will reposition the nipple so that it is in an aesthetically pleasing position.
The surgery normally takes about 3 hours. Patients normally go home the next day, and they have to wear a sport bra for about 6-12 weeks.
A person who might want to consider this procedure is someone who perceives their breasts to be too large for their body shape, body frame, or their lifestyle. It would be someone who finds clothes fitting a tricky task, who find that their exercising is aggravated by the size of their breasts.
The typical patient who would benefit greatly from having a breast reduction is a person who has big breasts that cause backache, that cause the straps of their bra to dig into their shoulders, that have increased sweating in the breast crease, and often because emotionally, they feel that having big breasts is not ideal for them.
So breast reduction surgery is extremely satisfying to perform simply because it's just so rewarding to see a patient who's so grateful for improving their quality of life. This is done through both improving the shape of their breasts, the size of their breasts, and in turn, it improves their entire quality of life, simply because all of a sudden, they can fit their clothes better, they can go and exercise, they can run without discomfort, their back pain starts improving. So overall, people are quite satisfied after this particular surgery, simply because it impacts their lives so much.
Often patients tell us that they are freer to move, they have less backache, the straps of their bra no longer dig into their shoulders. They can buy nicer clothes. They feel more confident wearing a swimming suit, and they feel that it boosts their confidence as well.
Recovery time from breast reduction can vary. I always tell my patients that the wounds will heal within a couple of weeks. Sometimes, it can take just a little bit longer. However, they will feel some discomfort for the next six weeks to come. I would normally advise to refrain from any strenuous physical activities for a minimum of eight weeks and to be wearing a supportive bra for that period of time.
The aim is to take things easy and allow the tissues to settle down nicely.
