Abdominoplasty

  • “An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure where we excise any overhanging abdominal tissue to provide you with a flatter tummy. Often, this is combined with liposuction to give more definition.

During abdominoplasty, which is performed under general anaesthesia, which means the patient is asleep, we make some incisions in order to remove the excess tissue skin and to tighten the remaining tissues in order to achieve a nice contour. Abdominoplasty can also be combined with liposuction, which is a very useful adjunct in order to further fine tune that contour of the abdomen that everyone wants to achieve.

A good candidate for an abdominoplasty is somebody who has a steady weight, is somebody who has an abdominal pouch that they have been trying to get rid of in the gym, but it does not work. It's somebody who has a bit of an overhang of tissue that creates a bit of sweatiness underneath the skin crease, and or is somebody who, when they wear their clothes, it just is ill-fitting or tends to overhang and give them the muffin top appearance.

A very good candidate for abdominoplasty is a person who understands what they are going to realistically achieve by having this particular procedure, and most importantly, someone who is otherwise healthy. It can be difficult to perform an abdominoplasty on someone who has multiple scars on their abdomen. But having said that, sometimes, our abdominoplasty skills can actually help improve the pre-existing scarring. Ideally, they should have completed their family because pregnancy can cause significant impact on their tissues and the corner of their abdomen.

Recovery from a tummy tuck or an abdominoplasty typically is about 12 weeks. We would have dressings for about two weeks, at which time after the dressing, we'll take them out. We normally also recommend our patients to wear an abdominal binder for six weeks. What that does, it allows the tissue to stick down and maintains the shape of the surgery. We advise our patients to avoid any strange exercises for 12 weeks.

Due to incisions that we have to make performing abdominoplasty, the patient will have significant scars on their abdomen. However, they will be placed in such a way that they are as inconspicuous as possible to achieve. The abdominoplasty in general can last a lifetime, but this will depend on the lifestyle of the particular person. If they maintain an active, healthy lifestyle without major weight fluctuations in between, then they will be able to enjoy that result for a very long time.
