Fat Grafting
-
“Fat grafting is a procedure where we harvest fat from one side of the body and then inject it to another side. The benefit of doing fat grafting is you're using your own natural tissue. Why do you do fat grafting? Essentially, often we want to camouflage a contoural defect. If there's a different part of the body or if you had a scar in the past, where we want to put in a bit more filler type material, so we use your own tissue, so your fat, that we're using as a filler to improve and camouflage the defect. In other areas of the body where we want to increase a little bit of volume, we use fat grafting. Essentially, fat grafting can be done anywhere in the body where there is fat. Our whole body is covered with skin, and under skin, there's usually a layer of fat.
The most common part of the body for fat grafting would probably be breast contour improvements, followed quite closely by facial augmentation.
Nowadays, more commonly, we're using fat grafting in the face area.
It can be used also following breast cancer reconstruction, where there is invariably a deformity following all the surgery that they've had. It enables us to fill out that particular area and just to recreate that harmony of the body shape that they've had previously.
Somebody, first of all, has to have fat so that we can harvest it. A good candidate is somebody who understands what are the limitations of fat grafting. What we want to do with fat grafting is improve contour, we want to improve volume, and we can also improve skin quality.
A person who fluctuates in their weight quite severely probably wouldn't be the best candidate for this procedure.
One of the commonest complaints I get from patients who come to see me for fat grafting is usually for facial rejuvenation. As we get older, the skin becomes a little bit thin. We get a bit of hallowing around the temple, bit of hallowing around the eyelids, and essentially, around the sulcus. We find that using fat grafting can improve the volume in the face, improve the quality of the skin, and mask some of the deep wrinkles that they have.
